Purpose

UPDATE: “We at the Genelach Dáil Cuinn Project are delighted to announce that Francis Mac Dermot, current THE Mac Dermot and Prince of Coolavin, has graciously undergone Y-DNA testing at YSEQ GmbH. He is now known to be in the R1b-BY20594 clade, which is a subclade of the R1b-BY20602 clade, which in turn is a subclade of the R1b-FGC5939 clade.

Please see the following post for more details: https://genelach.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=845

This leaves the Mac Diarmata as being the senior line of the Síl Muiredaig, genetically speaking. While this is an egregious discrepancy with the standard genealogies on the one hand, on the other hand it is confirming these genealogies by showing the appropriate genetic connection between the three traditional branches of the Uí Briúin, all descending from a common progenitor.”

DNA data has revealed a problem with the long held belief that Mael Ruanaid Mor (d. @ 973) is the son of Tadg mac Cathal Ua Conchobair (d. 956). The goal of this project is to identify the genealogical link between Brión (Macechach) mac Echach Muigmedóin (abt.0350-abt.0425) and Mael Ruanaid Mor Profile, first King of Magh Luirg, through the use of DNA comparisons.

The YDNA haplotree shows the descending mutations TBT100195, TBT100196, BY20602, and A6925. The dates of these mutations can roughly be surmised as: TBT100195 (720AD), TBT100196 (774AD), BY20602 (882AD), and A6925 (936AD)[1].

Grafting of genealogies between septs often occurred for many reasons; power, esteem, adoption, etc. I will use the names of individuals as cited by Dr. Jaski on chart #66[2] where not otherwise provided in existing profiles.

Research Notes

The old genealogies and annals references to Mael Ruinaid Mor, the progenitor of the Ui Maelruanaid, as the son of Tadg mac Cathal Ua Conchobar, has been shown by recent DNA studies as not genetically possible. Therefore his descendants and the corresponding dates in which they lived are speculative. Data gathered by the Sons of Aodh FTDNA project[3], the Genelach Dáil Cuinn Project [4], and Michael Rowley [5]suggest the Ui Maelruanaid are a distinct branch of the Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin from the Ui Conchobair.

A split in the Y phylogenic tree occurred around 450AD which created R1b-A260 and R1b-Y166841. Further, the next mutation occurred around 504AD and what is believed to be the origins of Ui Briuin Maicne Eochaid Tirmcharna and Ui Briuin Ai Clann Cathal. The ability to match the genealogy to the phylogenic pedigree of the O'Conor Don family [6] provides a clearcut foundation for comparing parallel SNP mutations through time. [7]

This results in a very specific genealogy to R1b-BY18115 who is likely Conchobar mac Tadg (d. 973). Conchobar is listed in the annals and other genealogies as the brother of Mael Ruanaid Mor; however there is no historical evidence to validate this; in fact, Mael Ruanaid is one of the most obscure figures of the clan who took his name, Ui Maelruanada. I would argue Tadg mac Cathal intentionally made an attempt to delegitimize Mael Ruanaid Mor as he gained power in Mag nAi and forced Mael Ruanaid into Moylurg. Legend says Mael Ruanaid Mor made a “deal” with the Ui Conchobar @ 960AD; he would relinquish his rightful claim to the throne of Connacht in exchange for ruling in Magh Luirg (Moylurg) [8]

The McDermot families also have a carefully documented genealogy going back to the same Mael Ruanaid Mor. Surname data from the above spreadsheets also shows a distinction between Ui Conchobar men and Ui Maelruanada. McDermott, McDermott Roe, McCormick, McDonnough, et al., are all Ui Maelruanada and those surnames all fall under the same R1b-A6925 subclade. The Ui Conchobar line is shown as R1b-BY18115 at this same point in time! which I estimate developed about 909AD.

The divergence of these two mutations occurred approximately 15-17 generations in the past. Using my heuristic formula of @27 years / generation:

16*27=432yrs.
909-432=477AD and my predicted birth date of Eochaid Tirmcharna and Fogartaig mac Cathal.

To provide somewhat of a double check of the methodology; using these two men's DOD of @ 558AD and the DOD of the supposed common ancestor Mael Ruanaid Mor @ 967 comes to 409 y/27=15 generations.

Ui Briuin

Ui Briuin Maicne Eócháda Tírmchárnai

Ui Briuin Maicne Eócháda Tírmchárnai Sil Muiredaig

Ui Briuin Maicne Eócháda Tírmchárnai Sil Muiredaig Ua Mailruanaid

Ui Briuin Maicne Eócháda Tírmchárnai Sil Muiredaig Ui Mailruanaid Mac Diarmait

The date of birth for these early Irish are rarely given. The dates used for each individual is based on my system that uses 27 years per ‘generation’, 54 years between mutations. Since the date of death for many are approximations, any age at death over ~85 is adjusted one ‘generation’.

Summary

  • IF the O'Conor Don genealogy is correct and the DNA data matches said genealogy;
  • THEN- Tadg mac Cathail Ui Conchobar (d. 956) who would be R1b-BY42869+, is not the same man as Tadg in Tuir Ui Conchobar (d. 956) who would be R1b-BY20602+
  • The opinion of my colleagues and myself is the best hypothesis currently, Clan McDermott DOES descend from Eóchád Tírmchárnae, who is currently the only realistic progenitor for the R1b-FGC5939 clade, and that it was the Ui Conchobar Síl Muiredaig who falsified their genealogy to give themselves more legitimacy when they assumed the kingship of Connacht.
